Ryan Family Vacation 1– Cherokee, NC

A few months ago we started planning to go on a trip with my husbands family. We’ve never gone on a trip with them before and they never really took family vacations that didn’t involve sports growing up! We knew we didn’t want to drive too far with the kids and Chris’s dad not needing to be too far away from home. This was a very special trip and a much needed chance for everyone to get a way and relax and enjoy time together!

Wednesday morning we had an appt. for Adley with the Pediatric GI doc (post coming soon on that) so we left around 11:30 from Louisville.

Our 6 hour trip became more like 8 hours! Ha! We stopped at my favorite BBQ place in the south (Sonny’s!) and made many restroom pit stops! We drove through Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and stopped at the visitors center before heading through the mountains to Cherokee.

It took us an hour or so to get through the mountains. It was so beautiful! I had never driven through there before and it was amazing! We planned to stop and take pictures on our way back through on Friday.

Cathy expressed interest in checking out the Cherokee reservation in NC on the other side of the park. I didn’t realize it was such a nice place to visit. It had lots of shops and was so clean and pretty.

We checked into our hotel that evening and had mexican for dinner! Yum!

The next morning we ate breakfast at the hotel and walked around to some local shops.

We went to the visitors center on this side of the mountains and walked through a replica of a settlers village. Then, we went to the Oconaluftee Indian Village and it was really neat. I would highly recommend going. Very interesting and educational!

We were tired and cranky at the point so we went back to the room for much needed naps!

After the naps, we headed out to some more shops and dinner.

We ended up eating at a local pizza place and then riding some go-carts!

On our way into Cherokee the day before we noticed some elk in the field so we went back to see if more had come out.

There were like 10 hanging out and everyone pulled off the side of the road to watch and take pictures!

It was really cool!

I’m so glad we checked out Cherokee. It was a really neat place. I love visiting little cities I never knew about. Chris and I talk more and more about road tripping during our summers and exploring our country with the girls. We talk very seriously about investing in a camper trailer!
